About
Note: Frankfurt has a large International community that has made this city their home. Frankfurt is the host to large trade fairs all year round and most of Frankfurt’s industry is Finance. In keeping with the city’s rich and diverse nature we’ve chosen to present this site in English because we embrace the fact that English is the language of global business.
What:
Frankfurt Girl Geek Dinners is part of Girl Geek Dinner Deutschland, the German counterpart of the original Girl Geek Dinners, that started out in London, England.
Girl Geek Dinner: A get together of likeminded girls (and boys).
Who:
We are comprised of girls that like to play around with gadgets, technology and Web 2.0. In the past, the term Geek use to belong to boys. Bill Gates for instance is a very famous and very rich geek. But times have changed and now there are so many girls that are in the fields of science, technology, engineering and computers and who also love gadgets that the term geek no longer refers to just boys.
Girl Geek: Someone who is female and has an interest in technology, particularly computing and new media. Not necessarily technically minded.
Some of our members are definitely girl geeks. Some also like gadgets and technology but would not consider themselves as ‘geeks’. Then, there are other members that are just interested and curious but who have other special interests like arts & culture, history, music and dance and this is a good thing because it helps balance out our group very well.
Why:
One of the main purposes of the Girl Geek Dinners is to bring together girls that are interested in computers, technology, Web 2.0. and new media. They do not necessarily have to work in these fields.
If you have a mobile phone, own a digital camera or use the internet then you would be considered a ‘mild’ Girl Geek.
Girls love to talk. We do it well. We want to talk to other girls about ‘geeky’ things but sometimes we have a hard time finding one another. Usually, technology conferences are filled with boys and there are seldom any girls around. We know they’re out there, but where?
Now, these girl geeks (and the ‘mild’ girl geeks) have the opportunity to all meet in one place, talk about gadgets, what mobile phones they like, stuff related to Web 2.0, ummm… vibrators, where technology is going and other related topics and issues that deal with girls, boys and the world.
We love Girl Geek Dinners because they serve as a platform for empowering not just the girls that join and attend but also the boys that go.
Boys? Oh yes, there are boys too. The Girl Geek Dinners were originally for girls to get together to talk and share ideas and experiences but we also welcome boys. In fact, we would love it if 50% of the people at these get-togethers were boys. It makes for such interesting dialogue.
A boy can attend a Girl Geek Dinner if he gets invited by a girl OR if he brings one girl along (girlfriend, sister, boss or mother).
When:
We would like to have a Frankfurt Girl Geek Dinner once a month. That is our goal. Since we are just starting up here in Frankfurt a few of us are busy preparing for our first Girl Geek Dinner in Frankfurt. Check back with us soon to find out when the first dinner will be.
We are tentatively planning our first dinner by the end of August or beginning of September.
Where:
Our Girl Geek Dinners will always be in a restaurant, café or in places where people can feel relaxed, can easily mingle, eat, drink and listen to presentations. We will also choose locations that can easily be accessed by local transportation.
How:
People. We welcome all girls and boys (boys, you need to make friends with a girl member to get invited OR simply bring one girl along) to our Girl Geek Dinners.
Sponsors. We welcome Sponsorships. Sponsors would gain a lot by helping support a Frankfurt Girl Geek Dinner because Girl Geek Dinners are famous all around the world. They would be helping out a very good cause and it would be great for their image and profile too.
If you would like to sponsor a Frankfurt Girl Geek Dinner event or if you have any questions please contact Carmen Villadar.
